Twerking History
“Black people will not be erased from the creation, history and innovation of Twerking” - Lizzo
🍑 Originating from several African dances including the Mapouka, Twerking has swept across Black music scenes through Jazz, Jitterbug, New Orleans Bounce and beyond.
🍑 DJ Jubilee, the Ying Yang Twins and Big Freedia were pivotal figures in Twerk music scenes long before it went mainstream with Beyonce and Miley Cyrus poppin’ booty.
🍑 Twerking has become a mainstream and beloved dance, celebrated from fitness centers to transformational festivals and I believe we must pay homage to its roots.
It is with gratitude and humility that I play Black music and move my body the way Black women have for decades. Ten percent of my earnings as a DJ go towards supporting Black artists in the Seattle area working with the Central District Forum for Arts and Ideas.
